Understanding Stock Market Charges in India (Budget 2024 Schedule)
Every executed trade in India incurs regulatory statutory levies beyond the broker's flat fee. Knowing these charges helps traders identify the true breakeven target before placing an order.
1. Government Statutory Taxes
- STT (Securities Transaction Tax): Charged by the Ministry of Finance. For Equity Delivery, 0.1% on buy & sell; for Options, 0.1% on sell premium.
- Stamp Duty: Charged as per the Indian Stamp Act, levied strictly on the buy side (0.015% delivery, 0.003% intraday/options).
- GST: Flat 18% applied on (Brokerage + Exchange Charges + SEBI Charges). GST is never charged on STT or Stamp Duty.
2. Regulatory & Exchange Fees
- Exchange Transaction Charges: Levied by NSE/BSE for order matching and clearing infrastructure.
- SEBI Turnover Fee: Standard rate of ₹10 per crore of total turnover across all segments.
- DP Charges: Flat depository fee (approx ₹13.50 – ₹18.50 + GST) when selling equity delivery holdings.
